Located just outside of Greenbrier Mall and formerly occupied by Friendly’s Ice Cream, this 4,400 square foot, free-standing restaurant building will serve as a second location for the successful Black Pelican Restaurant based out of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Featured on Food Network’s Diner’s, Drive Ins and Dives, the Black Pelican offers a unique dining experience and boasts rave reviews. With its flagship location housed in a building constructed in 1874 which was used as a United States Lifesaving Station, the owners are sure to bring a unique atmosphere and experience to the diners of Chesapeake.
Jason Smith, owner and chef stated: “My business partners, Julia Lee and Sara Morris and myself are very excited about finally expanding the Black Pelican. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for several years.”
Smith grew up in the Essex Meadows neighborhood at corner of Battlefield Boulevard and Volvo Parkway, about a mile from the new location. “Bringing the Pelican to my hometown is such a cool feeling. The day I graduated from Oscar Smith in June of 1995, I moved to the Outer Banks to work at the Black Pelican. 20 years later, I’m bringing the Pelican to Chesapeake.”
The owners anticipate hiring approximately 45 employees and hope to open in early March, 2015. They have partnered with the Chesapeake-based design/build firm, RRMM to handle the remodeling of the property.
